Hollywood stars Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are ending their marriage after two years. Lopez filed for divorce on Tuesday in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, as confirmed by court documents reviewed by the BBC.
The couple, often referred to as "Bennifer" by the media, officially wed in Las Vegas in July 2022, followed by a larger celebration in Georgia a month later. Their romance first sparked on the set of the 2003 film *Gigli*. Though they initially planned to marry that same year, they ended their relationship in early 2004. Nearly two decades after their initial romance, they rekindled their relationship. “Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient—twenty years patient,” Lopez remarked in 2022 after revealing their Las Vegas wedding.
The BBC has reached out to their representatives for comment on the situation. According to a court filing, Lopez or her attorney must serve Affleck with a copy of her petition to dissolve their marriage. Media reports suggest that while Lopez, who had legally changed her last name to Affleck, did not mention any prenuptial agreement in her divorce petition.
Documents filed in LA's Superior Court indicate that both Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, are required to disclose their financial information, including income, expenses, properties, and debts. Both parties are obligated to report any changes to their finances "until there is a final agreement about all financial issues in your case." The court has given Lopez 60 days to submit her financial disclosure, after which Affleck will have another 60 days to do the same. Failure to provide or update this information could result in court-imposed penalties.
Speculation about their relationship has been circulating for months. Reports indicate that the couple put their Beverly Hills mansion up for sale at $65 million (£50 million) and have been seen without their wedding rings.
Affleck, a two-time Oscar winner, was previously married to actress Jennifer Garner, whom he met on the set of the 2001 film *Pearl Harbor*. The couple separated in 2015 after ten years of marriage and share three children. Lopez has been married four times: first to Cuban-born waiter Ojani Noa from 1997-98, then to her former backup dancer Cris Judd from 2001-03, and later to singer Marc Anthony, with whom she has twins, from 2004-14. Lopez, also known as J.Lo, was once engaged to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.
